Greener IT

In Spring 2008, Robin Fisk wrote a series of five articles for Third Sector magazine's Technology column called ‘Greener IT. You can download all 5-in-1 from the link, below right

Manage your follow up tasks

If you use Contact History you'll be aware that contact history records can be assigned to yourself or others to follow up. For instance you might log a membership enquiry from a contact and assign it to be followed up by the appropriate person or department within an organisation. If you can get everyone into the habit, it's one of those simple business processes that can make a massive improvement to your efficiency. Download the summary page from here.

Data encryption add-in

The Data Encryption add-in for Progress and ProgressCRM provides additional protection for the most sensitive data in your database.

ProgressCRM Data Encryption Add-in is designed to complement the standard ProgressCRM security by encrypting debit and credit card numbers stored in the ProgressCRM database.

Key features of the Add-in

  • It encrypts all types of payment card data information for total security
  • ASI Europe provides a get a 'key' to decrypt it (for example for use in confidential reports, BACS exports etc).
  • It is fully compatible with the ProgressCRM Payment Card Processing module.
  • The encryption is performed at SQL Server level to prevent access from other applications.

Dreams Come True case study

“The purchase of a new database was a significant investment for us and we had to be sure that what we got could not only fulfill our current requirements but was capable of growing with us" said D'Arcy Myers.

Vision Aid Overseas

Vision Aid Overseas is a UK charity dedicated to helping people in the developing world whose lives are blighted by poor eye sight, particularly in those cases where spectacles can help. The charity has ambitious plans to expand support in the UK to increase its activity overseas, and is streamlining its processes in order to become more operationally efficient.

It recently identified a need for a new application to replace their existing systems and methods of storing information, and to support its ambitious growth strategies selected ProgressCRM. VAO knew that by centralising disparate databases, they would not only facilitate better internal communication and sharing of information, but they'd also provide better administrative support to their membership and fundraising operations.

"There were other advantages too", explained Deputy Director Jeremy Jalie, who also heads up fundraising and IT at VAO. "We've improved the reporting facilities, the production of management information and increased our income."

Aquila Way

Like many early social work initiatives in the United Kingdom, Aquila Way was born out of a passion of young Christians to help homeless young people in the Northeast of England.

Aquila Way's Chief Executive Jo Grant said "As we grow, we recognised the need to manage our increasing number of contacts. We had all those involved with our projects, those people we help, our supporters and donors, volunteers, business partners and more."

The charity selected ProgressCRM not only to organise their contacts, but also to provide the central database for all the fundraising and financial management.

Segmenting your contacts in ProgressCRM

By recording detailed contact history, supporters' preferences and interests, and past donations in Progress, you automatically build up valuable intelligence about your contacts and their financial status. Segmentation can then be used to drive your direct marketing and fundraising activities for maximum effectiveness.

But what is segmentation?

Simply, it's the identification of groups of contacts by a number of criteria. This might just be all contacts living in a certain area for mailshots supported by regional appeals, through a number of additional selections or filters based on status, giving history, known interests etc; to the ultimate personalised highly targeted mailshots or other forms of contact. Its about understanding who they are, their interests and behaviour, and responding appropriately to satisfy their individual needs.

Ten Technologies to Watch

In the second half of 2007, Robin Fisk wrote a series of articles for Third Sector magazine's Technology column called ‘Ten Technologies To Watch' . You can download this from the link, below right

"A career in IT, after a point, brings out the cynic in the best of us.  Every month fresh-faced entrepreneurs bring out the 'next big thing' in IT, some gain momentum and catch the imagination of the market, but most fade away to a chorus of 'told you so' from the IT veterans," says Robin Fisk. "It's true that some new things are just old things in new packaging, but occasionally they make the cut and we wonder how we managed before."

This series looks at ten technologies at various stages of their development, and whose time may be about to come, and especially how they might be of use to charities.  Clearly, such predictions can look daft with the benefit of hindsight, these may be no exception, so do take advice before investing your lifesavings in them.
